About me
David Crafts (they/them) is a fierce advocate, compassionate educator, and unapologetically joyful presence in the San Francisco Bay Area, where they live with their partner, Jason, and three mischievous rescue cats.A queer, non-binary, first-generation, low-income college graduate, David has spent over 25 years championing equity, access, and liberatory education within colleges/universities and the nonprofit sector in California, Michigan, Ohio, and Florida.Serving as a San Mateo County LGBTQIA+ Commissioner and Co-Chair of the Commission, David enjoys serving the community in which he lives, works, and plays in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has previously served as Executive Director of EqualityToledo (OH) Following a tragic beating of a trans woman in the Midwest which gained national attention, David developed curriculum to teach and better prepare police cadets response techniques and trauma-informed collaboration-building with LGBTQ+ community members. They have also served on numerous community development and homelessness-solutions boards across the country. David is also a Novice with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a leading order of queer and trans nuns who have devoted themselves to community service, ministry and outreach to those on the edges: And to promoting human rights, respect for diversity, and spiritual enlightenment through the promulgation of joy and expiation of stigmatic guilt. A former high school and university cheerleader, David now gives back as a board member with the Cheer For Life Foundation, helping fund critical services for vulnerable members of the LGBTQ+ community in the Bay Area and beyond. David also serves on the Board of Advisors and keynote speaker for the Lavender Graduation Legacy Project and is a member of LGBTQ Leaders in Higher Education.Their academic journey includes a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s of education degree from Grand Valley State University in Michigan along with specialized certifications in Trauma-Informed Sexual Assault Investigation, FEMA & Homeland Security Crisis Management, and Human Resources. They have also conducted research in Organizational Leadership theory centering around Queer Identity Development. In every space they enter, David hopes to infuse strategy with soul, laughter with liberation, and systems with compassion—lifting others as they climb.
